The Donald Chronicles, #4 – Jan. 23, 2017

Trump, the Birther:

While on the subject of The Donald’s predilection for lying (yesterday’s post), what else comes to mind? How about his prolonged (2011-2016), absurd and mean-spirited disinformation campaign, alleging that President Obama was not born in the US? While he doesn’t get credit for the actual invention of this conspiracy theory, he, more than any other public figure, kept it front and center over a period of 5 years. What kind of person does that? Well, we’re finding that out right now.

The CIA speech:

Along with blatantly lying about the size of his Inauguration turn-out, in his already infamous speech to the CIA, The Donald also said this: “And then they say, ‘is Donald Trump an intellectual?’ Trust me, I’m like a smart person.”(!!!)  As to the cheering heard off camera at that meeting: “CBS News confirmed reports that President Donald Trump brought a studio audience to his visit with the CIA on Saturday. The news agency reports that an official said the visit left a wake of ‘unease,’ ‘made relations with the intelligence community worse,’ and was ‘uncomfortable.’”

Tax returns:

Yesterday, Kellyanne Conway made it official – that The Donald would not release his tax returns. What conclusion can one draw from this, but that he has something to hide?

“Alternative facts”:

This Kellyanne Conway statement (see yesterday’s post) is being very widely discussed on the Web. The New Yorker comedian-in-residence, Andy Borowitz, the master of the one-liner, wrote this: “Kellyanne Conway has rethought her relationship with reality and has unfriended it”.

In today’s news:

Trump has also been talking about re-negotiating NAFTA. Opinion is very divided about the wisdom of withdrawing from NAFTA and TPP (and I don’t have an opinion). But if it works, and does indeed keep more jobs in the country, while not making the costs of imported goods go sharply up, then it’s a plus for him and the country. It’s one of those things where the devil is in the details, so we’ll just have to wait and see. But until then, why do I suspect that it will be just another means by which the rich get richer and the poor get poorer?

Another wait and see item in the news today is Trump’s plan to move the US Embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. This will please both the fanatical pro-Israel religious lobby in this country, and Netanyahu (Israel’s prime minister) and the Israeli right-wing –  but it would likely constitute a serious obstacle to success in the negotiations aimed at achieving a two-state solution to the Israel/Palestine impasse. Trump appears to see such a move as demonstrating unambiguous support for Israel, after Obama’s refusal to veto the UN vote against settlement construction in the occupied territories, but there is no real doubt about the commitment of the US to Israel’s continued security and well-being.  I don’t want to see Trump take any move that frustrates a two-state solution. It’s high time that the Palestinians get their own state and self-determination, and I believe that this is ultimately in Israel’s best interest.

Womens’ reproductive rights:

This was the main rallying focus of the Womens’ Marches that occurred just two days ago. And, today, we see that Trump means to push ahead on his opposition to abortion (see item #3 in the above clip).

“If we needed more evidence that our nation is undergoing some kind of a surreal descent towards a neofascist dictatorship, this should do the trick. Our President, Donald J. Trump, has just issued a proclamation declaring his own inauguration day to be a ‘National Day of Patriotic Devotion’: ‘NOW, THEREFORE, I, DONALD J. TRUMP, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim January 20, 2017, as National Day of Patriotic Devotion, in order to strengthen our bonds to each other and to our country — and to renew the duties of Government to the people'”.  (OccupyDemocrats).  In 2015, Bob Wynn (LinkedIn) described Trump as a ” … Megalomaniac with Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD)”

Conflicts of interest:

DT has today been sued in federal court for violation of the Emoluments clause of the Constitution, by the Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW). This is the Emoluments clause: “No Title of Nobility shall be granted by the United States: And no Person holding any Office of Profit or Trust under them, shall, without the Consent of the Congress, accept of any present, Emolument, Office, or Title, of any kind whatever, from any King, Prince, or foreign State.” (HuffingtonPost). According to a CREW press release:  “The foreign emoluments clause of the Constitution prohibits Trump from receiving anything of value from foreign governments, including foreign government-owned businesses, without the approval of Congress, adding that its lawsuit requests the court to issue a judgment defining elements of the Foreign Emoluments Clause that the new president’s interests do or will violate, and an injunction forbidding him from accepting such payments”. Grabbing pussy:

What was the symbolism of the pink pussy hats worn in the Womens’ Marches? “’The hats are in part a response to Trump’s remarks about grabbing women by the p*ssy’ Kat Coyle, the owner of The Little Knittery in Los Angeles told“.

So, here we are. We have elected a self-professed and proud pussy-grabbing President! And this fact was common knowledge prior to election day. What were they thinking, those Trump voters, what were they thinking?
