First Thing in the Morning

First thing in the morning
the male mockingbird
makes it perfectly clear
what it’s all about

From his perch atop the tallest tree
he’s telling other males
that this is his territory
and telling females
that he has what it takes

It’s the play of life
competitive, combative
not taking no for an answer

How else could we have gotten
where we are
so far
from our humble beginnings?
Humility gets you nowhere
Assertiveness is all

Male mockingbird, doing his thing

Male mockingbird, doing his thing
