That is New Mexico state law, which also requires that motorcyclists wear helmets. But, as is painfully apparent on this overly-noisy Memorial Day weekend, these laws are not being enforced.
I don’t like it when people deliberately make “excessive or unusual noise”, as they pass by my home. And I bet you don’t either. To the unmuffled engine noise, one can add the music played on boom boxes that carries as far. I see no reason why New Mexicans are being required to put-up with this assault on our senses.
There are laws on the books. Why, then, is “rolling thunder” tolerated? I intend to ask that question of my state legislator.
