The Pacific Salmon

The Pacific Salmon

The Pacific salmon fry swims down its natal stream

and into the ocean

where, over some years, it grows to sexual maturity

Let’s say that this is the fun part of its life

Then it returns to the same river

and swims upstream

jumping falls if it has to

to the gravels where it began its life

There, it releases eggs or milt

This is probably also fun,

but is its final act

It promptly falls apart

and dies.

You can look upon the Pacific salmon as a robot

destined, by its DNA, to this ridiculous routine

But answer this question:

How different are you from the salmon?
