In the summer of 1968, Karen, Ethan and I traveled to Oregon, where I went to work for the Northwest Outward Bound School. We were headquartered along the edge of a clear-cut on Foley Ridge, uphill from the McKenzie River. Our courses took place in the Sisters Wilderness.

I had a student by the name of Scott Vollstedt in my patrol on one of the courses I taught in the Sisters. We’ve remained friends since, running rivers together. He took the following three photos.

My photos were used for this newsletter. These students are on the South Sister. I instructed on the course described here (see photos below).
In August, I went off to do the first North Cascades “mobile” course, in the State of Washington, as described above. Willy Unsoeld, the Everest veteran, was in charge. We started in the Twisp area, and worked our way south.

This photo was used for a poster, as described below. The shot is of the staff summiting Bonanza Pk. (the highest non-volcanic peak in the N. Cascades, 9,511′), while the students were on solo to the north side of the peak. Willi Unsoeld is to the right.

After some fierce bushwhacking on the trail-less approach through the valley seen below, we got up onto these beautiful snowslopes of Mc Gregor Mtn., N. Cascades
As described in the Autumn 1968 newsletter, “North Cascades Report” (above), the weather got worse and worse. We never got to do Glacier Peak, and I didn’t get any more photos. The course ended at Stevens Pass, and after saying goodbye to the students, the staff were seated in a restaurant there, with very little money amongst us. A woman sitting near us had finished eating, with a lot of food left uneaten on her plate. I said I’d get that food as soon as she left. Willi then got up and asked her for it, beating me to the punch. Willi was a real character, and very entertaining. He died in an avalanche on Mt. Rainier in 1979, leading an Evergreen State College group on a winter climb, this following the death of his daughter, Nanda Devi, on the mountain of the same name, in 1976.
Karen and I climbed Mt. Shuksan that summer. It is the 5th. highest non-volcanic peak in the N. Cascades, and certainly the most beautiful. It’s one of the most-photographed mountains in the world.

Karen, Ethan and I returned to Cambridge, Mass for the school year, and then the Colorado Outward Bound School in the San Juans in the summer 0f 1969. Here’s the link:

Steve: Came by chance on your web diary. I am the Jon Storer on the Grand Teton summit register 8/11/64. You and Hiser blew by we 3 after we had bivvy’ed. We were from Sacramento and I was really green then. BTW Adolph Bauer, a german, later died in an avalanche in the alps. A friend and so sad. A later post of yours mentions a Pear Lake Hut trip with the Sierra Club; I may have been on that trip too. Al Steck was there on my trip as well as two of my Berkeley physics profs a Herb Steiner and Bob Tripp and Dick Slansky a physicist who later was at Los Alamos, as was I. Could it be the same trip? Later I climbed a lot in Yosemite, Gunks (grad school Stony Brook physics), Bugaboos, ski bum at Squaw where I shared a house with Eric Beck on Apache Court lots of climbing together at Donner.
Anyway we must have crossed paths many times. I now live in Golden, Colo and mostly ski and bike and, wouldn’t you know, just got my first new hip. Let’s have beer together sometime and talk about BITD.
