Not one Memorial Day Weekend passes without eliciting mean-spirited commentary on my part. Why is this? It’s because I live alongside Hwy 68, which is the main route from the south to Red River, NM, the site of a massive motorcycle rally. This is from the Red River website:
“Memorial Day Motorcycle Rally
MAY 21-25, 2015 – Get ready for the rumble as 20,000 bikers from all different backgrounds line Main Street for one crazy party.”
Rumble, indeed. Most of the motorcyclists that attend ride Harleys, which are intentionally left un-muffled. They call it “rolling thunder”. Many riders also have on-board sound systems turned on high, which make as much of a racket as the motorcycles themselves.
Yesterday, I enjoyed sitting on my porch and photographing the birds that came to our feeders: https://believesteve.wordpress.com/2015/05/23/todays-western-tanager-and-western-bluebird-juvenile-may-22-2015/. Today, that’s simply not possible.
Dare I venture a mean-spirited observation? Dare I suggest that these riders are morons?
One of our places in Santa Fe was across the street from a tattoo parlor where people had a habit of firing up their Harley’s at 3:00 in the morning. I lost all my sense of romance or humor for loud motorcycles in those years. Been muttering some pretty grumpy things about Memorial Weekend today too….
