Rinconada Canyon, NM

I’ve previously posted about Rinconada Canyon (April 30, 2012). Rinconada Canyon is my name for the upper end of an otherwise unidentified drainage that crosses under Hwy 68, at the north end of Rinconada, right next to the State Highway Dep’t. maintenance yard. The canyon is cut in the soft Tesuque Formation, and features small-scale but interesting erosional features (slot canyons, ribs, pinnacles, mesas). Kathy and I took a walk up the canyon (along the eastern drainage) a couple of afternoons ago (April 21). Some wildflowers were in bloom – yellow pea (Lathyrus aphaca), and the low cryptantha (Cryptantha humilis). We’ll get more wildflowers in the next weeks if there’s been sufficient precipitation over the winter and spring.  We’ll see.
