In 1971, I was hired to institute a Wilderness Program at New Mexico Tech, in Socorro. The following forays were with students who had enrolled in that program.
Big Hatchet Mountain (elev. 8441′) is located in the boot heel of New Mexico, and rises 4000′ above the playas found to either side. It is a BLM Wilderness Study Area, and the Continental Divide Trail passes through the range.
The White Mountains Wilderness is accessed from the Three Rivers campground, found on the west side of the White Mountains, not far from Tularosa. This volcanic range culminates in Sierra Blanca (elev. 11,973′), which is located on the Mescalero Apache reservation. Sierra Blanca Ski Area is found on the opposite, eastern, side of the range.
The first four photos seen here are from the White Mountain Wilderness, the following photos are from Big Hatchet Mountain.
