Good vs. Evil

I’ve not always been as nice as I could have been. Nor have you, for that matter. We all have the capacity to be mean … but, nothing, absolutely nothing, touches the present day Republican Party for outright hateful and racist behavior. I have a hard time accepting the fact (so amply demonstrated of late) that so many of my fellow citizens are so exceedingly unpleasant. But it cannot be denied. These people are motivated, first, by racism. They cannot stomach the fact that Obama is black (even if he is also half white). Also, they are motivated by greed, and don’t care to share any of their wealth with the less fortunate. They attack the poor as being “freeloaders”. We are seeing a “culture war”, to be sure. It’s the culture of good vs. the culture of evil. Evil, as we’ve been told, is always out there. There are the sociopaths and psychopaths, who have been born that way. But there are also those who fall more to one end of the distribution of sociality – the interest in and willingness to cooperate and seek equity with others. They are less motivated to do so, and more motivated to look only to their own self-interest. The greedheads (for lack of a better term) have now taken over the American political system, and now begin to reveal themselves for what they are. To my way of thinking, the only question that now remains to be answered is whether we can take control back from the greedheads without resort to violence.
