Poem for Dawn

View From Alta

Go down to the city?
It stinks
It smells
and gives me a headache

From the top, on the ridge
only the smoke, haze, fog, smog
can be seen
The city indicated only
by its shroud of ghastly grey
or sometimes black

The distant range floats serene
above the valley of smoke
a neighbor across that sea of shit
a distant ship afloat

Go down to the city
to see a flic
Skiing is good
in itself
but the sterile snow castrates
as the city’s smoke embalms

Go down to the city?
because it is there
